Safety and Security

Members of the dean’s office are responsible for insuring the safety and security of each student and staff member in the school building and for maintaining a positive school tone. A dean is assigned to each Small Learning Community. Deans are available to mentor and to assist students with academic and social issues that may arise during the transition into high school and/or during the changes that occur throughout the high school years. Members of the dean’s office are able to assist students with conflict resolution and mediation. Each dean is also a member of the Building Response Team (BRT) and is trained to carry out the school’s General Response Protocol (GRP) for emergency preparedness. Each dean is responsible for explaining, interpreting and enforcing the Citywide Standards of Intervention and Discipline Measures as set forth by the New York City Schools Chancellor. Deans are also trained in Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) and they promote the expected positive behavior in and out of the school community. Deans may also make themselves available to review transcripts, permanent records, programs and report cards with parents and students.

PBIS and Curtis PRIDE

The behavioral expectations at Curtis High School are designed to provide a clear understanding of expected student behavior, be few in number, be positively stated and structured and use familiar language. These expectations are Punctuality, Respect, Integrity, Discipline and Effort.

Our ultimate goal is to improve our overall school climate and to build relationships that will pay dividends going forward. We hope to develop a positive school community, to teach everyone the expectations for our school and to implement reward systems for being a student that shows PRIDE. By concentrating on positive behaviors, we hope to create and maintain a positive and safe learning environment.

If you need any assistance feel free to contact your child’s dean or Mr. Burbano, Assistant Principal of Safety and Security at (718) 390-1800 ext. 1220.
